At Marches HR, we’re passionate about supporting people… not just in the workplace, but in our wider community too. That’s why we’re proud to be one of the first members of the Business for Good scheme, a new initiative launched by the Herefordshire Community Foundation (HCF).
We’ve always said HR is about people first and that doesn’t stop at policies and procedures. For us, being part of a community means giving back where we can. Joining the Business for Good scheme was a way to do just that – not just with words, but with action that supports long-term local change.
What is the Business for Good scheme?
The Business for Good scheme is a fantastic initiative from HCF that brings together local employers who want to make a tangible difference here in Herefordshire.
Launched to support grassroots projects and individuals who need help the most, the scheme focuses on key local issues such as:
- Tackling poverty
- Supporting education
- Improving mental health
- Boosting community wellbeing
By joining, businesses contribute to a shared fund that helps real people and real projects in our local area. It’s a simple but powerful way to create positive impact. It also connects businesses who share a common goal to build a stronger, more resilient Herefordshire.
In fact, since its inception, HCF has already awarded over £7 million in grants, supporting thousands of local causes. That’s the kind of result you can really see and feel.
Why the Business for Good scheme felt right for us
We’re proud to call Herefordshire our home. Our Director, Lorna, moved here in 2012 after meeting her Herefordian partner and it’s been home ever since.
Our business was built in Herefordshire. The majority of our clients are based here too – local charities, small businesses and community-focused employers. And so much of our growth has come from the relationships we’ve built right here, with the people and organisations that keep this county moving.
So when we heard Bridie Sullivan (HCF’s CEO) talking about launching the Business for Good scheme at a recent Herefordshire Means Business breakfast, it felt like a natural fit. This isn’t just about donating money; it’s about showing up. It’s about walking the walk when it comes to values like collaboration, integrity and community. It’s about being part of something bigger than our own business and choosing to lead with purpose.
Joining the scheme was another way for us to do what we always aim to do: give back in a way that feels meaningful and practical.
A quick message to other Herefordshire businesses
If you’re a local employer who cares about our community (whether you’re a start-up, charity or established business), the Business for Good scheme is a simple, meaningful way to get involved.
You don’t need to be a large corporate or have deep pockets to take part. One of the things we love about the scheme is its flexibility. You can contribute in a way that suits your size, sector and budget. It’s about pooling our efforts (whatever shape they take) to create something bigger than any of us could achieve alone.
We small businesses can be powerful drivers of change. That’s something we’ve always believed. And this scheme gives us the chance to show it.
