A light-hearted joke can lift a workplace – but when does banter start doing more harm than good? Where is the line when it comes to banter vs bullying?
Let’s talk about something we’ve all seen (and probably taken part in) at work: banter. A quick joke, a playful dig, a bit of back-and-forth – it can help teams bond, boost morale and make the work day more enjoyable.
But here’s where it gets tricky… What happens when banter crosses the line into bullying?
As HR consultants, we’ve seen how blurry that line can be in terms of banter vs bullying – and how easily it can turn a positive workplace into a toxic one. While genuine banter can bring people together, the wrong kind of “joke” can leave people feeling isolated, hurt or humiliated.
And when that happens, it affects more than just the person on the receiving end.
Banter vs bullying? Here’s how to tell the difference
The simplest way to put it? Banter makes everyone laugh. Bullying makes someone feel small.
Let’s break that down:
- Banter is mutual, light-hearted and harmless. Think friendly teasing where everyone is in on the joke.
- Bullying is one-sided, targeted and damaging. It can leave someone feeling embarrassed, excluded – or even afraid. It might not always be intentional, but the impact is what counts.
And that’s the real challenge. What feels like “just banter” to one person might feel like bullying to another.
The ripple effect: Why it matters
When banter crosses the line, the fallout goes far beyond the joke:
- Morale takes a hit. Even if it’s not meant to hurt, a poorly judged comment can leave someone feeling undervalued or left out. And let’s face it – no one does their best work when they’re feeling that way.
- Engagement drops. When people don’t feel respected, they switch off. They stop speaking up, stop contributing and start counting the minutes until they can head home.
- Your culture suffers. A culture that turns a blind eye to harmful behaviour can quickly become toxic. And when your culture goes downhill, so does everything else – teamwork, productivity and your ability to attract (and keep) good people.
So how do you keep banter in check?
The key is awareness of banter vs bullying, and accountability. Here’s where to start:
- Set the tone from the top. When leaders are respectful, others follow. It only takes one person in a position of influence to shift the culture.
- Provide training. Not everyone knows where the line is when it comes to banter vs bullying – so don’t assume they do. Short workshops or conversations about respect and inclusion can make a big difference.
- Take action when needed. Have a clear zero-tolerance policy for bullying and back it up with action. It shows people that the culture you’ve created really matters.
