Creating calm in your team: 6 simple ways to boost workplace resilience and morale

In small businesses and charities, your team members often juggle multiple roles, making workplace resilience an essential skill. A resilient team adapts positively to challenges, feels less stressed and achieves more together.

The good news? You don’t need a big budget or in-house wellbeing team to build workplace resilience. There are plenty of low-cost, high-impact ways to support your people’s wellbeing day to day.

Here are some practical, easy-to-implement strategies to help your team thrive under pressure, bounce back from setbacks and enjoy greater calm and confidence at work.

Foster a supportive culture

A supportive workplace culture, where employees feel genuinely valued, significantly boosts workplace resilience. Encourage open dialogue, show appreciation regularly and demonstrate trust in your team. Even something as simple as a weekly check-in or saying thank you more often can make a difference.

Krista Passberger from Energy Centre tells us:

As a Yoga teacher, I’ve seen how powerful it can be when a workplace genuinely prioritises people’s wellbeing. When people feel safe and valued, they’re more relaxed, more open and more connected. That’s the foundation for a healthy and thriving workplace. You don’t need to eliminate all the stress overnight. Often, it starts with giving people permission to pause and find a moment of quiet in the middle of a busy work day. Just a few minutes to slow down together or to acknowledge one another’s efforts can shift the energy of a whole team and boost workplace resilience.

You could also consider offering more flexibility… whether that’s around hours, location or work styles. Flexibility shows trust and gives people a greater sense of control, which is a huge contributor to workplace resilience.

Prioritise physical health

Physical wellbeing directly influences emotional resilience. Promote regular short breaks, encourage gentle physical activity and consider incorporating wellbeing sessions into your regular routine. Tiredness, aches and stress all build up fast… especially in roles that involve screen time or repetitive physical work.

Offering walking meetings, standing desks or access to wellbeing sessions (like yoga or gentle stretching) can help reset both body and mind.

Krista says, “Caring for our physical wellbeing doesn’t need to be complicated. Often, the simplest things can make the biggest difference. In my weekly and workplace sessions, I guide people through gentle stretches and breath-focused movements designed to ease tension in common areas like the neck, shoulders and lower back. Here’s something to try: pause once every hour, for just 1 minute, to stand, gently roll your shoulders backwards a few times and take 3 slow, deep breaths. Even this small action can help release tension and instantly refresh your focus. Just a few mindful minutes of movement can help reset your body and refresh your mind, especially during long or stressful days.

Encourage mindful moments

Simple mindfulness practices (like focused breathing or short periods of quiet reflection) can significantly reduce stress and enhance clarity. Encourage your team to step away from their desks, phones and to-do lists… even if just for 5 minutes.

Mindfulness isn’t about being perfectly calm or sitting cross-legged for hours. It’s about being present. A mindful tea break, a walk without headphones or a deep breath before a tricky conversation are all ways to bring mindfulness into everyday work life.

Incorporating mindfulness into your team’s routine is a simple but powerful way to build workplace resilience over time.

Krista shares, “Try setting a reminder on your phone once or twice a day to pause and do a quick body scan. Take a moment to notice any areas of tension or discomfort you’re holding in your body and try to consciously relax those muscles. This small check-in helps you reconnect with your body and release built-up stress, making it easier to stay present and focused throughout the rest of your day.

Create opportunities for team connection

Building stronger connections among team members contributes greatly to workplace resilience. Arrange regular team-building activities, collaborative projects or even shared relaxation sessions. The goal isn’t forced fun… it’s about helping people feel comfortable asking for help, sharing ideas and supporting each other.

Even informal moments like shared lunch breaks or a quick “wins of the week” catch-up can create a sense of belonging and foster resilience.

Krista says, “Group Yoga and meditation sessions can be incredibly effective for helping teams not only unwind together but also build trust and community in the workplace. These sessions help to reduce stress but also encourage openness, communication and a supportive atmosphere, which naturally enhances team cohesion and workplace resilience.”

Introduce calming and restorative experiences

Innovative relaxation experiences (such as sound therapy or guided relaxation) can deeply restore your team’s energy and focus. These sessions allow people to fully switch off… something that’s often hard to do in a busy work environment.

They’re particularly valuable after busy periods, before big projects or simply as a regular commitment to your team’s wellbeing. Giving people space to unwind signals that it’s okay to rest; not just to push through. These practices build workplace resilience by helping your team manage stress before it escalates.

Krista shares, “In my experience, calming experiences like Restorative Yoga or Mindfulness sessions have a profound impact on teams. They create a calming environment that helps individuals release tension and recharge both mentally and physically. Teams who regularly engage in these sessions report feeling more focused, balanced and connected, which ultimately improves collaboration and productivity. It’s a simple yet powerful way to nurture wellbeing and workplace resilience.”

Provide continuous learning opportunities

Encourage workplace resilience through ongoing learning and development. When your team feels capable and equipped with new skills, confidence grows and stress diminishes. That doesn’t mean signing everyone up to formal courses… microlearning, knowledge sharing or bite-sized workshops can be just as effective.

You might explore training in communication, emotional intelligence or stress management, giving people tools to handle pressure better and support others around them. All this supports a resilient mindset and culture.
